Wiki

Yes, I know things have been dead here.

Ideas are still churning, and we'd like anyone who is interested to get involved in the idea phase.

If the idea of free WiFi inspires you and you want to participate, please make an account and participate by joining our wiki page: http://www.geekpondering.com/gorillawiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

We need help with everything, from long-term sustainability ideas to technical solutions to just getting this thing off the ground. No matter what your skill-set, there's probably something valuable you can add.

So join us in the...er... wiki... jungle...

Oh whatever, just sign up and be part of the team.

First Post

Okay... so this is it. Er... first post.

We are lacking good free WiFi in Tokyo/Yokohama. @Kimiecat and @Stagerabbit (me) were discussing this, and decided we'd like to try to fix this... along with you.

We're still in the idea phase, but we've discussed what we don't want in the user experience:

- No forced webpage that pops up the first time you log in
- No registration & email confirmation
- No advertising
- No bullshit

What we want is harder to pin down, but some ideas that came up:

- Wireless encryption (password is public)
- Each host is isolated from the others (duh)
- Our custom appliance is almost totally plug and play for those hosting one in their home or business (let's call them nodes until some network geek tells me not to) and shares the node host's home/business internet bandwidth, but not their network.

Why people host nodes:

- Project is public and non-profit (community spirit)
- Businesses get stickers to put on their windows/doors that shows they have free WiFi
- Discounts at local businesses for node hosts?
- An cool "underground" vibe that we help perpetuate?

Why it's called "Gorilla-Net":

- It's a mystery.

Anyway, we'll throw up a wiki or forum sometime soon so that we can discuss these ideas further. This blog will be reserved for announcements about progress on the project (or failure, I guess).
